Let's start with a song from "Blood Money." This is "Misery Is The River Of The World." Waits wrote those songs with his wife, Kathleen Brennan. This month, on the 20th anniversary of their release, those albums are being reissued on vinyl with new, formerly unreleased live versions of some songs. When Terry spoke with him in 2002, he'd just released two lyrical concept albums, "Blood Money" and "Alice," which are now considered some of his finest work. We're going to listen back to two of our interviews with Tom Waits. His songs have been used on the soundtracks of several films, and he's acted in the movies "Down By Law," "Short Cuts," Francis Ford Coppola's "Dracula," "The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs" and "The Old Man & The Gun." He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. The darkness of his lyrics is accentuated by the rumble and rasp of his voice, a voice that sounded old even when he was young. The people he usually sings about are loners, losers, hobos, outlaws and drunks. There's always been an element of mystery surrounding his life. The New York Times once described him as the poet of outcasts. Tom Waits is one of the true eccentrics of pop music. I'm David Bianculli, professor of television studies at Rowan University in New Jersey, in for Terry Gross. And so now I've got this Guinness certificate, which I think gives me the right the next time I get the note where they say we want extra jump scares, or I can say, "well I've got the world record.This is FRESH AIR. I just really wanted to kind of put it to rest. I react very much to not the jump scare itself, but to the insistence that I get usually from executives that say, "you need to have a prescribed number of in the show, and you need to have five jump scares in the first 15 minutes or else it's not scary." I think they're overused is really my point. Exorcist 3 has an amazing just out of your seat jump scare that I adore. One of the greatest of all time jump scares is in Jaws and I love it. And the Guinness thing is really funny to me because because I am not the filmmaker who likes jump scares. There's a fundamental difference between being startled and scared. On The Midnight Club's first episode breaking a Guinness world record for number of jump scares It really becomes a show more about life than about death. We're told from the very first episode that these characters are here because they're dying imminently, and how you approach the horror of that becomes more about the horror of not living fully before you die and the horror of not knowing where you're going. Typically in horror, the backbone of the whole thing is: Are these people going to live? Are they going to survive? And for a story like this, the outcomes are predetermined.
